Why deciding to change usually doesn’t work.

The reason that your decision to change (lose weight, quit smoking, improve your golf game, release limiting beliefs or blocks) usually doesn’t work is that the decision has been made from the conscious part of your brain. This part of your brain is a mere 10% of your brain’s  power. While the vast majority of your brain’s power and influence lies well beneath your conscious mind (10%) in your subconscious (50-60%) and unconscious mind (30-40%). What this means is that you may make a conscious decision to lose weight but if your subconscious beliefs aren’t in alignment, your weight loss goals will fail, or you’ll lose weight only to quickly gain it back.


When we consider the power of the conscious vs subconscious aspects of our mind, we definitely need the subconscious on our side. If the subconscious is not aligned with our conscious goals, we have trouble achieving our goals!

So why would the subconscious mind not be aligned with our conscious goals? Throughout your life, the subconscious mind has acted like a sponge, soaking up whatever programming it is receiving from its environment in the form of experiences, attitudes, values and beliefs.

Based on these experiences and what might be told to us by our parents, teachers and friends, we may have taken on beliefs such as “I will never be good enough”, “I have to work hard” or “No one will ever love me” or “I’m always sick” or “I’m a loser.” These belief programs will continue to run throughout our lives giving us the conscious thoughts and experience of “never good enough”, “hard work for every dime”, “rejection,” “ill health,” and “repetitive failures.” If we have an experience as a child of falling out of a tree, we may “install” a phobia program that generalizes to “all heights are dangerous.”
